We are studying the book of Isaiah and in today's lesson Isaiah is speaking to the people of Judah after they have been overthrown by the Babylonians and dragged into slavery. Families have been ripped apart- scattered on the wind. Isaiah is trying to comfort and reassure the people that their God is still present; He has not forsaken them. The passage is chapter 40. Read it if you have a minute.
Sandra Richter, the writer and teacher of the study, asks this question, "If you were one of these exiles, struggling to believe this great report, which of these images would have gotten you to your feet?"
All of chapter 40 speaks to the earth science teacher in me, but verse 26 would have gotten me to my feet.
Lift your eyes and look to the heavens:
Who created all of these?
He who brings out the starry host one by one,
And calls them each by name.
Because of his great power and mighty strength,
Not one of them is missing.
"Not one of them is missing." How the remnant of scattered believers must have clung to these words, relying on God's promise that they were not lost to Him. And although it is impressive enough to look up at the night sky with the unaided eye and seeing the innumerable stars realize the power and might of God, how much deeper is your awe with the images and knowledge revealed to us by the Hubble telescope.

How many millions of galaxies? How many zillions of stars? And none of them 'lost' but each of them "called by name" by our God!!
Isaiah goes on to say...
Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the creator of the ends of the earth....
Those who have hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
Until tomorrow, dear friend,
Shelli
