Our Pike County Arts Council has launched the bottle tree project. You know how some places have painted -up alligators all over town, or pelicans; well, we are about to have bottle trees.
I love bottle trees. There's one outside my she-shed. They evoke a distinct southern sensibility. Bottle trees are supposed to trap evil spirits before they can get into your house. With that in mind, my dad has one outside his credit union to keep bankruptcies away. My sister has one in her office at the hospital.
Eudora Welty , a Mississippi girl, was fascinated with bottle trees and rode around the back roads photographing them. She also wrote about bottle trees in a short story entitled, Livvie. Another Mississippi jewel, Felder Rushing, has written a book about bottle trees. So I leave you today, dear friend, with a link to Felder's fount of information about bottle trees. Enjoy!
Until tomorrow,
