The Living Cross

Our church held the most beautiful and meaningful Holy Week celebration.

The Maundy Thursday service was told from the point of the view of the trees that had been present at important times during history to  remind us of God's covenant; the Tree of Good and Evil  in the Garden of Eden, the trees at Mamre where Abraham was told that Sarah would have a son, the olive tree whose branch was carried in the mouth of a dove back to Noah, the burning bush from which God spoke to Moses, the trees felled to build the temple, the tree in the Garden of Gethsemane under which Jesus prayed, and finally, the tree made into His cross.

The Good Friday service and communion were followed by the shrouding of the cross in black cloth. Then the church was open throughout the afternoon so that people could meditate at the Stations of the Cross. Each station was painted on a 16 x 20" canvas by a lady in our Sunday School class. They were beautiful!! Each station was propped up in the sill of one of the stained glass window in the sanctuary. A pamphlet was provided containing a description of the station as well as an accompanying prayer.

Then on Easter Sunday, each family was asked to bring flowers they had picked from their yard to adorn the Living Cross. The cross was wrapped with chicken wire and the flowers were just tucked into the wire. After seeing the cross draped in black, it was so uplifting to see it blossom in bright living colors!! After adding their flowers, each family took a picture at the cross.

What a week!!

Until tomorrow,
Shelli
